After taking a read at this wonderful article called The War on Science Fiction and Marvin Minsky I had not realized that I was a victim of this. I can vividly remember back in the 90’s when I first learned about a Sci-Fi channel. I set my TV on Sci-Fi and there it would stay. There was no need to change the channel; there was always something exciting and interesting on. Then, all of a sudden things started to change. It started going downhill when all the “Sci-Fi Originals” started to show up. Some of these shows were just down right insulting to the intelligence of the audience and so Sci-Fi faded into a memory with me. Nowadays I occasionally flip back to catch a little Stargate and I even enjoyed the few episodes I’ve seen of Eureka, but not much else I’m afraid.
In that article it highlights how the line has been blurred and taken away from what is Sci-Fi. I understand wanting more female viewers, but altering to the point where Sci-Fi is now SyFy defeats the purpose. All the relationship drama can be found on LMN, Lifetime and Soap. I want Sci-Fi! And if women want Sci-Fi they will have no problem with the way the shows and films are presented WITHOUT all the drama.
