Dungeon Fighter Online is a 2D side scrolling beat-em up game reminiscent of the days of Final Fight and Streets Of Rage.  As usual with a game of this type you select a character.  although you give the characters their names they are still just the same five base characters.  Each with a different fighting style and path of progression.  After selecting a character you a dropped in the world Arad.  The game itself is styled like a MMORPG, but handles like an action arcade fighter.

The world of Arad is a fantasy RPGish type world, and with this being an MMORPG the world is built with towns and dungeons.  As you would expect in the towns you can buy and sell items, obtain missions, and meet other players.  All of the aspect of your larger MMOs are here.  The real fun happens when you accept a mission and move to a dungeon.  The dungeons work on instance base.  The game creates an individual dungeon just for you.  So you don’t have to run around and hope that some high level don’t have anything else to do with my life player hasn’t wiped out everything.  This also means that the level of the dungeon is matched with your own.  Giving you the opportunity to hand out a few beat downs free of charge before the game gets really tough.

The game has five different classes to choose from.  All start with the Slayer since this is the class I choose.  His story is that a demon has possessed his arm making him only able to fight with one hand weapons such as swords.  The Slayer is a close range fighter, but has a bit of reach with his weapons, and is week against enemies with long range attacks.  The Fighter class is as the name suggests.  Up in your face beat down.  This class uses punches and kicks along with very impressive combat techniques to get the job done.  Next up is the is the first of two long range classes, the Gunner.  This guy attacks at long range with, you guessed it, guns. This guy also looks like Vash the Stampede! This class is not very strong physically so its would be a good idea to keep your distance from enemies with this class.  The next is the Mage.  Don’t be fooled by this little ladies diminutive stature, she has an arsenal of magical spells at her disposal. No self respecting 2D side scrolling beat’em up would be complete without the big brute.  In this game it is the Priest.  Yes, this is one big holy man who will pummel you with a huge wooden cross. Okay I there may be a Trigun fan on the staff there.  This holy man is the in your face raw power character of the game.  He also has magical power to improve his fighting and to heal.

It is great to see the combination of the new and old in this game.  I jumped in thinking that it wouldn’t be much, then three hours later I was wondering where did the time go.  The games simplistic side scroll whack a mole (I played with the slayer class.  And he had a stick you see) style play is very addictive.  Very, very addictive.  In no time you will find yourself in a battle pulling off special attacks on huge bosses.
