With the upcoming release of the expansion Eberron Unlimited Dungeons & Dragons Online will officially be considered a free to play game. Based on the details released about the switch it looks as if DDO will be using a combination of microtransaction and a VIP premium membership. Right now DDO is taking applications for the beta phase of this transition. DDO looks to gains alot from this transition in the way of a new and increased player base along with increased revenue.

This all looks good for new players, but some in the community have doubts about the transition. Some are concerned about the status of their characters if they choose to downgrade to free to play status, and the exploitation of downgrading. We will all have to wait and see what happens and how they eventually deal with these concerns.

As time moves forward I hope we will see the transition of other popular MMO games moving over to free to play.
