Warrior Epic is an action-packed free MMORPG set in a vibrant fantasy world. Take command of a variety of Warriors through solo, PvP, and multiplayer dungeon-raiding adventures.

From the the first videos and screenshots Warrior Epic has set itself as a different type of MMORPG. Now that the game has been released we finally get to see if the game lives up to its hype. If its very intuitive or just a bunch of new worthless crap that drives MMOs down another notch. Warrior Epic boosts it unique features such as the Spirit System and Warrior Halls even to its unique style of play. I’ve had a chance to experience it all and here is my verdict.

One thing that drags the good name of MMORPGs in the lowest of low mud is the downloading of the massively huge game files. Warrior Epic is the first if not only I have played that attempted to take alot of pain out of this. The system that they use is called Download On Demand. You download a small part of the game to get you started and while you play the game continues to download in the background. Also when in a party and they enter an area where you had not already downloaded the area downloads before you enter that area. I also experienced while playing solo a blue wall with an hour glass telling me that it was downloading the rest of the map. That did seem pretty nice to be able to play while the map was downloading. This system is a blessing and a curse. This seems like one of those ideas that sounded good on paper, but in practical use failed to deliver. The overall problem is that Warrior Epic’s style of play works against a system like this, and what I mean is there isn’t a town center like in other MMORPGs. You create a room where people join and you start a match in the style of an FPS. If one person doesn’t have the map downloaded then the entire party is stuck waiting while the map downloads then loads. In most of these cases the people drop from the room to find another room. The other problem is the corruption of files downloaded. This causes a problem where the game will sit at the launch window checking the files and never move forward. This bug is caused by the files not being able to checked. To save you the trouble of looking for the fix here it is. First go to your Warrior Epic folder where you installed the game. In that folder is another Warrior Epic folder. In this folder are some .psp files and may contain other files. Create a temporary folder and move all these files into the temporary folder just in case there is a problem you can move the files back. After moving the file start the launcher again, and download the game again. Yes, you have to download the game again. My advice is to let the launcher sit at the login and background download the whole game to avoid any more problems with the download. See this defeats the whole purpose of having the DOD (Download On Demand). I think in time this concept will catch on and become the best way to play these large games.

I can say that Warrior Epic is one of the few games that delivers what it said it would in its previews. One of the most exciting elements I saw in the previews was the Spirit System. I have to admit I thought the Spirit System would be different than what it really is, but I cant fault the game makers for that one. That was just my own speculative imagination about what was presented. As a player in Warrior Epic you can have multiple characters, when one of these characters dies in battle their spirit comes out and is available to your other characters to call during a battle. When called the spirit performs a large assist attack. You can reclaim this character by reviving the spirit. Not quite what I had in mind but I guess they have to make the game challenging and not give too many advantages.

The Warrior Halls feature is different from what you would find in a traditional MMORPG. And i really shouldn’t be calling this a MMORPG, but an Action RPG…yeah lets do that. Since this is a Action RPG you wont find a huge world that you freely roam. Logging in you find a list of room like you would in a first person shooter. You join a room and it takes you to the host’s Warrior Hall where you prepare for the battle. In the hall you can change the game options, customize your character, choose a new character, and purchase items to take with you. This setup makes it extremely easy to get into the battle quick without having to search out quest and members for a party. The only downside as mentioned before is if a player in the hall has not downloaded the area.

Once you get to playing the games controls are very easy to pick up on. Gameplay is done mostly by point and click. Everything is kept very simple with no distraction from the action. The panels are not huge and intimidating and have very low profile. Things are so simple you don’t even have to pick up items. Just smash a pot and the items float to you. Playing has only two frustrations that I experienced. The first was the camera angle when using the mouse to change view. There are times you want to tilt the camera back a little more, but the game will not allow it. This is very minor compared with number two. The way Warrior Epic gives your character experience is you collect the experience points throughout the stage and upon completion you collect the experience. So what happens if the server times out and drops you in the middle of a match. You guessed it you lose all the experience points you had collected up to that point. Not to mention any items you may have payed for and used. If something isn’t done to resolve this issue the game will be dead very soon.

I really really hope they work out these issues. Warrior epic gets a little bit of grace from me since the game is new and there are things to be worked out with the new venture into download on demand. I don’t want to see a game with such potential fail. With all its frustrations the game is entertaining when you can get through without problems. Give it a try, but be ready.
